Keurig Review

January 16, 2010
As I’ve mentioned before I’m not a coffee drinker, I would much rather hot chocolate or the occasional cup of tea, Lee on the other hand is a coffee drinker, maybe even a coffeeholic. I’ve never really paid much attention to coffee makers because of this until I came across Keurig.

Keurig has a great line up of single cup coffee makers and they were generous enough to send me a Platinum Home Brewing System. This machine is great, not only does it make Coffee but it does tea and HOT CHOCOLATE in less than a minute.

Simply fill the 60oz reservoir with water (makes up to 10 cups before needing to be refilled), turn the machine on, wait while it warms up the water (which is very fast), then pop in a premeasured k-cup and select your cup size there are 5 to choose from 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 10oz and 12 oz, press the brew button and in seconds you have a hot cup of your favourite flavour. You can even brew directly into most travel mugs if you slide out the removeable drip tray.  The platinum brewer even has an iced beverage setting.

The Platinum offers a ton of features including Auto On/Off, Digital Clock, Adjustable Temperature Control and the “Set Your Favorite Cup Size” option.  Lee’s favorite feature is the blue lit water tank and LCD display.  This is the mack daddy of all coffee brewers and I am not sure why we never bought one before but we are in love.  We have even had a few friends and family members go buy one because they loved ours so much.

Keurig has an extensive line of flavours which Lee has been sampling and he said it’s so hard to choose his favourite that he will probably have to continue purchasing variety packs, since we got this machine he’s been drinking so much coffee it’s a wonder he even sleeps at night anymore and has started inviting friends and co-workers over for coffee.

I mentioned K-Cups and i’m sure some of you are wondering what that is, well, the Keurig single-cup brewing system uses a special packaging for coffee, tea and hot cocoa called K-Cup® portion packs or “K-Cups®”.  Each K-Cup is an airtight, mini-brewer that locks out oxygen, light, moisture and humidity while locking in freshness and flavor.

There are hundreds of K-Cup varieties available that include blends such as Light, Medium, Dark, Extra Bold, Flavored, Decaffeinated, Half-Caffeinated, Fair Trade, Organic and Kona from some of the best Arabica coffee in the world. and thats just the coffee, The Keurig brewing system also offers tea and hot cocoa in K-Cups. Fine teas are available from Bigelow, Celestial Seasonings, Gloria Jean’s Teas, Timothy’s Teas and Twining’s. Keurig brewed hot cocoa is available in K- Cups from Green Mountain Coffee and Timothy’s and is also available in specially developed packets from Ghirardelli.

One of the best things is that with the Keurig you can buy a reusable filter so if it is harder for you to get K-cups like it is for us then you at least have something that allows you to make a cup of coffee still without pulling out the regular brewer.

Keurig was founded by coffee lovers who believed that coffee should always be served fresh, whether at home or at the office, just as in a gourmet coffee house. They noticed that people were constantly leaving their homes and offices in search of a fresh cup of coffee and asked themselves: “Why do we brew coffee a pot at a time when we drink it a cup at a time?” From this question, the revolutionary concept of Keurig K-Cup® portion pack brewing was born.

The Keurig Platinum Home Brewing System that we recieved is just one of many machines available, there’s sure to be one that you shouldn’t live without.

The Keurig platinum brewer retails for $169.99 and is available at Keurig and retailers such as Bed, Bath and Beyond.
